I grew up in the Chilterns, exploring the country lanes, bridleways and footpaths on foot and two wheels. I didn’t think to take a map and often got famously lost with my dog, usually finding my way home again, but sometimes having to find a phone box to call for help! Those childhood adventures helped me to build a picture of the landscape around me, which I could later learn to place on a map when I joined the Venture Scouts with winter camping trips to the Lake District, and expeditions to Europe and Africa, leading on to even bigger adventures of my own.
